Rolf Maas

my name is rolf maas

Creating prints is a way for me to deal with the world around me and everything I see in it. I can feel extremely happy when I see sunlight creating patterns on a wall that change every second. I notice how the pattern of a pavement fits together, and how the night can embrace me, making me feel small while everything else around me feels big. It is wonderful to capture these moments in an image.

Printing is a very physical way to create an image. First, you must create something before you can begin printing, which is quite indirect. This is unlike painting, which is a more direct process; you see the result immediately. Every aspect of the entire process affects the final image. In this sense, it requires a lot of craftsmanship. There is a lot that can go wrong during this process, but there is also a lot to discover when it does! New ideas can be born! The materials you work with, the tools for processing, the paper, the ink, the tools to roll the ink, the press, and the pressure applied all influence the final image. But of course, I also have an impact; my mood and physical strength make me part of every print.
