Karin Wiertz

Karin Wiertz trained as a textile designer. After finishing her studies, she made experimental animation films for years, together with Jacques Verbeek. Their work is managed by the Dutch Film Museum Eye.

But she always continued to work in textiles. Both influences are still visible in her visual work.

When her textile work increasingly required larger formats and the implementation of her ideas in textile would take a long time, she changed medium and began to execute her designs as paintings.

She executes these designs on canvases measuring 120 x 80 cm or 80 x 80 cm. She works exclusively with straight lines: horizontal, vertical, diagonal or placed at an angle of 30 degrees. She uses the same dimensions for each canvas. In addition to the acrylic paint, she uses textile materials such as ribbons and felt.

Each canvas is part of larger series, or themes: series 1: inspired by weaving and braiding, theme 2: based on isometric triangles, series 3: module designs.

She makes an exact design for the composition in advance. The color is chosen during the performance. Each new canvas is inspired by the previous one. Because during the execution of one, the idea for the next arises.

In addition to her own visual work, Karin taught color theory and pattern design at the Academy of Visual Arts in Maastricht for 30 years.

Photography of all works: Etienne van Sloun

Summary Karin Wiertz

Karin Wiertz is trained as a textile designer. After finishing her studies she made years of experimental animated films, together with Jacques Verbeek. Their work is managed by the Dutch Film Museum Eye. But she also always worked in textile.

Both influences are still visible in her visual work. When her textile work needed longer and larger sizes and the implementation of her ideas in textiles would take a long time, she changed medium and began to carry out her designs as paintings.

She uses the same dimensions for each fabric. In addition to the acrylic paint, she uses textile materials such as ribbons and felt.

Each canvas is part of larger series, or themes: series 1: inspired by weaving and braiding, theme 2: based on isometric triangles, series 3: module designs. In advance she makes an exact design for the composition. The color is chosen during execution. Each new canvas is inspired by the previous one. Because during the implementation of the one, the idea arises for the following.

In addition to her own visual work, Karin taught for 30 years color theory and design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Maastricht.
